Water is always surrounding the plant roots in a hydroponic setup. Because water and nutrients are always present, it allows plants to grow faster and stronger. Plants can be harvested early which can result in more plants being planted per season. Another advantage of having water always present is that it minimizes the space needed to garden. Plant roots no longer have to spread out to search for nutrients as it always in reach. Since the roots do not have to stretch outwards, the nutrients which should be allocated to that task can be used in growing. Though hydroponic gardening has its advantages, it has restrictions on plant requirements.

The nutrient concentration of a hydroponic garden is often referred to as the EC level. If your hydroponic garden consists of Grodan plants, they would require less fertilizer then what they would need in a soil based garden. This is because of the technical system of hydroponic gardens. In soil gardens the nutrients in fertilizers are not all absorbed by the plants, because the soil acts like a buffer. In a hydroponic set up, there is nothing acting as a buffer, and all the nutrients from fertilizers are easily absorbed by the plants. It is a general rule that EC and pH should never be lower then 5 and higher then 7, as the plant would not be able to absorb any nutrients.

The most important factor in any type of gardening is having enough nutrients available. In soil based gardens, there is never sufficient nutrient, which is why fertilizers are used in every soil garden. Hydroponic gardens operate a little differently; they use a specialized type of fertilizer which is customized to be efficient in hydroponics. Using hydroponic fertilizers are more difficult to use compared to soil fertilizers. Be sure to read the instructions carefully, the hydroponic fertilizers usually require a certain Ph and dilution level.
